Spirit Airlines has expanded its service network with the inclusion of additional flights to several Caribbean destinations. It’s launching two new routes later this year.
The airline, based in Dania Beach, Florida, will fly from Fort Lauderdale to Belize City and Grand Cayman.
Flights to Belize City start on November 21. They’ll run three times a week, on Mondays, Fridays & Saturdays.
Grand Cayman flights begin on December 4. They’ll also run three times a week, on Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
Belize City has been officially added to Spirit Airlines’ expanding network of destinations. This year alone, Spirit has added five others: Key West in Florida, Macon and Savannah in Georgia, Chattanooga in Tennessee, and Columbia in South Carolina.
With these new routes, Spirit will now offer over 100 daily flights from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) to more than 70 destinations.
Although new for Spirit, Belize City has seen service from Fort Lauderdale before. Southwest Airlines flew the route before the pandemic but dropped it in 2020 and never brought it back.
Spirit hasn’t flown to Grand Cayman in a long time. The airline last operated this route between 2006 and 2008. Since that time, both Southwest and JetBlue have begun offering flights along this route. JetBlue ended theirs in April 2022. Southwest pulled out in June 2023.
As Spirit Airlines goes through major changes after bankruptcy, its rivals like JetBlue and Southwest are also adjusting their strategies.
Now, Spirit sees a chance to grow at Fort Lauderdale. It’s aiming to attract travelers who want leisure destinations and don’t want to fly out of Miami International Airport (MIA) with American Airlines.
These new flights are limited to three days a week, which makes them a low-risk test. But they’re launching during winter, a peak travel time.
Spirit Airlines Caribbean flights tickets are now on sale—starting at $85 to Belize City and $65 to Grand Cayman, one-way.
