British Airways and Ryanair Flights Disrupted by Marseille Wildfires

UK travellers flying into Marseille Provence Airport faced significant disruption on July 8, as wildfires near the city forced a temporary suspension of flight operations. Local authorities confirmed the closure of the airport’s runway around midday due to a rapidly spreading wildfire in the nearby town of Les Pennes-Mirabeau, just outside Marseille.

To battle the flames, emergency services deployed 168 firefighters, supported by two helicopters and 68 fire engines. The wildfire scorched approximately 350 hectares (865 acres), prompting officials to urge residents in northern Marseille to stay indoors with shutters and doors closed. No injuries or casualties have been reported.

Authorities also requested that people avoid obstructing the streets so emergency responders can operate efficiently. Live broadcasts revealed a foggy, smoke-filled sky, creating an odd dusty look in this area.

Flight Delays and Cancellations for British Airways and Ryanair

According to the Airport’s live flight tracker & reports, all incoming flights to the airport have been delayed since early afternoon. British Airways and Ryanair flights have been especially impacted.

A British Airways flight from London Heathrow scheduled to land at 3:00 PM is currently still listed as “on time.” However, the 5:00 PM service from Heathrow has been officially cancelled. A Ryanair flight from London Stansted scheduled for 4:15 PM is now delayed. Later in the evening, the 9:00 PM British Airways flight is, as of now, expected to operate on schedule.

Ryanair Issues Travel Advisory

Ryanair has issued a notice for its customers traveling to or from Marseille Provence Airport, urging them to check their Ryanair app for the latest flight updates. In a statement, the airline said, “We regret any inconvenience caused to passengers by this incident, which is beyond Ryanair’s control and affects all airlines operating to/from Marseille on Tuesday 08 July.”

Passengers affected by these disruptions on British Airways and Ryanair flights are encouraged to stay updated through their respective airline apps and websites. The situation remains fluid as firefighting efforts continue near Marseille.
